I've posted an installer for a semi-functional mockup of my KFlop CNC Controller app in RayLs Files in the Files section. It can be installed by just opening the ZIP file and running Setup.exe. When done, you can uninstall through ControlPanel->Add/Remove Programs. It is completely self-contained, and won't muck with anything on your system.

Nearly everything is working in the GUI now, and it's about ready to be bolted up to the hardware (as soon as my new KFlop shows up....). It currently runs on a KFlop simulator, so no hardware of KMotion software is required. Obviously, all the machine motion is completely dummied up, but gives you an idea what it will look like in action. At present, the menus do not work, so none of the other dialogs are implemented - just the main "Run" page. The editor is really rough (a VERY minimal implementation), and the fixture/pulley/tool/feedrate/spindle DROs are not connected to anything yet, but do otherwise work (i.e. - you can change values).

You can't currently change the axis DRO values, other than zeroing them using the buttons next to each DRO. The right-click context menu in the G0-code editor is only barely implemented - the only function that works is toggling line numbers.

If you have some time to kill, give it a try, and tell me what you think. Do the controls make sense? Are the right things being enabled/disabled at the right times? Are there any important functions missing? Keep in mind this dialog is intended primarily for running G-code programs, no debugging, not so much setting up, etc. There will be additional dialogs for doing configuration, probing, fixture setup, debugging/monitoring, etc. There will be a separate toolpath window.

Regards,
Ray L.

Troy,

Can you look at the error report, and see what it's complaining about? I'm guessing it can't find a required DLL. I think the error dialog has a button on it that will copy the error message to the clipboard, and you can then post it into a message here.

This has worked for a couple of my friends - I'm surprised it's not coming up for you. What OS are you running?

Ray L.

Troy,

Isn't there an option to view the report before sending it to MSFT? I believe that will open the report in NotePad.

Hi Ray,

It doesn't work for me either.  The Setup doen't give me any options.  It just flashes, creates an

Application Files\CNCController_1_0_0_3 directory with 8 files in it which are mainly the deploy files

I can't find if or where it put any application or dlls.

The start  menu has a CNCController in it but its properties just shows it as a "Application Reference"

Clicking it shows a CNCController.exe in the task manager for an instant so it must be somewhere :}

But that is it.

Where is the installation supposed to be at?

I'm on an XP box.

Regards
TK

Troy,

Thanks. It appears the error is coming from the ScintillaNet TextBox control I'm using, but I don't have a clue what's wrong with it. Have to go scratch me head for a while....

Tom,

That is one of the joys of .NET development using Express. It does a bizarro install I have no control over. You should find it somewhere way down in Documents & Settings/username/Local Settings/Apps/2.0.

This is disappointing. A friend of mine tried it a few days ago, and I had an error with one missing Scintilla DLL, but when I fixed that it came right up for him. Troys problem also has to do with Scintilla.

Ray L.

Hello Ray,

Thats the beauty.... and beastliness of "one-click" deployment.

Maybe you could take all the pertinent .dll's and .exe's from your bin folder and copy them to a separate folder. Then just zip up that folder after you test your exe from it and share it here.

I don't know what that means.... I assume "full trust" means it will install and enable DLLs or something? So far, all the problems I've had have been build issues. Never had an actual installer problem, even on a VB.Net app that's been shipping for several years now.

Regards,
Ray l.

At present, the menus do not work, so none of the other dialogs are implemented - just the main "Run" page. Troy,

Cool! I'd be interested in your impressions. I've just updated the Zip yet again. I believe virtually everything is functional now. Syntax highlighting seems to be working nicely, ALL DROs are now "plumbed in" and editable. The only things that are still now implemented are the upper left-hand buttons, and the editor context pop-up menu. Just need a KFlop, and I can start getting it wired into the KMotion libraries.

Ray L.

At present, the menus do not work, so none of the other dialogs are implemented - just the main "Run" page. Brad,

I am, but it's really not convenient to use that one for SW development, which I do mostly in the house, in the evening. Based on my experience, a couple of friends are also switching to KFlops, so one of them is having his shipped directly to me, so I can use it for finishing up the app, and once it all *appears* to be working properly in the "safe" environment of a stand-alone board, I will then work up the nerve to try putting it on the real machine (where a serious bug could easily do expensive damage....)and give it a go. Should not be long now!

Regards,
Ray L.

Hi Ray,

It runs for me.  Nice!   I like it.

It isn't re-sizeable.  I was able to get it to crash.  Load SimpleCircle.ngc, Run, Wait til finished, Run again.

I noticed if I edit the GCode the syntax highlighting doesn't update :}

Tom,

Cool! You're right on all counts. I have not yet implemented re-sizing, it will come in a bit. The highlighting right now is done only on load, but that will change when I implement the real editing functions. Both easy changes. I'm integrating the toolpath display right now. I'm using the BasicViewer app, and I'm going to integrate a simple WCF server into BasicViewer, so I can leave it as a separate app, and just launch it from my app. They will then find each other, and all should work.

I'll take a look at that crash. I'm sure it's something stupid in my G-code parser. I've only run it on my own G-code so far.

I've also improved the editing of DROs, so you can now drag the mouse to select one or more digits, in addition to using the keyboard. And double-clicking now selects all digits. They also change color when in edit mode. I'll post a new version when I get your crash fixed, and, with luck, I'll have the toolpath display working later today.

Regards,
Ray L.

Syntax highlighting seems to be working nicely, ALL DROs are now "plumbed in" and editable. The only things that are still now implemented are the upper left-hand buttons, and the editor context pop-up menu. Just need a KFlop, and I can start getting it wired into the KMotion libraries.

Tom,

The SimpleCircle bug is fixed - it just ran off the end of the file, and didn't rewind. I've also updated all the DROs to edit like the axis DROs. New version posted with the fixes.

Regards,
Ray L.

Syntax highlighting seems to be working nicely, ALL DROs are now "plumbed in" and editable. The only things that are still now implemented are the upper left-hand buttons, and the editor context pop-up menu. Just need a KFlop, and I can start getting it wired into the KMotion libraries.

This is getting kinda cool.... I have a WCF server running in my app, and a WCF client running in the BasicViewer Toolpath display, and they are talking to each other. So, with just a very little bit more work, I'll be able to open the BasicViewer app any time, it will find the controller app, load the GCode file, if any, sync up to the current line position, and start displaying the toolpath more-or-less in realtime. Absolutely incredible how easy it is to do things like this in .NET! And this all took only about two pages of very simple code!

WCF is a nice piece of technology.  I built a machine access service that runs in MM that I plan to create control pendant apps for smartphones.

Are there any important functions missing? Keep in mind this dialog is intended primarily for running G-code programs, no debugging, not so much setting up, etc. There will be additional dialogs for doing configuration, probing, fixture setup, debugging/monitoring, etc. There will be a separate toolpath window.

Brad,

Yeah, it really is amazing. I already have it working, just some bugs to iron out.

At present, the menus do not work, so none of the other dialogs are implemented - just the main "Run" page. Troy,

Thanks. I've spent no time on aesthetics at this point. Ultimately, I'd like to do some nice graphical buttons. For now, it's just what I could do with about zero effort.

Syntax highlighting seems to be working nicely, ALL DROs are now "plumbed in" and editable. The only things that are still now implemented are the upper left-hand buttons, and the editor context pop-up menu. Just need a KFlop, and I can start getting it wired into the KMotion libraries.

I've posted a significantly improved version of my CNC Controller app to the RayLs Files folder, along with a second app, that does the toolpath display. These install as separate apps, but "find" each other at runtime. Install them separately (just open the Zip file, and double-click Setup.exe), then startup the CNC controller, and you can either start the ToolpathViewer manually from the Start menu, or from View->Toolpath. If a Gcode file is loaded, it will display the entire toolpath. If the gcode program is running, the toolpath will update in real-time, displaying only the portion of the toolpath already executed.

There have been a number of pretty significant changes in this version, so I *hope* it will install and run correctly.

Subject: Re: If You're Feeling Brave And Have Time To Kill....
BTW - Understand that right now the "simulator" is an absolutely trivial piece of code, which does not support many G-codes. So, it you may find it misbehaves on some codes. It will typically just sopt executing when it hits a code it doesn't know, so if you tell me what the line before the highlight is, it should contain the offending code. If so, let me know, and I can easily add them. Also, it parses offsets (G52, G92, G54-59), but does nothing with them. This really should have no impact, since all the motion is completey dummied up anyway. The toolpath display should always be correct, as it does process them all.

I did get my new KFlop yesterday, so I'll be plumbing it up to the controller over the next few days, and expect to have it actually running on the real hardware very soon.

Ray L.

Hello Ray,

In the tool path display when you say ‘in real time’ you mean as the callback comes from the interpreter which is actually the moment it is placed in the buffer.  There will be a time delta relative to your TP look-ahead.

Brad,

Yes, of course. It will update basically as fast as I get status updates from the KFlop.

Hello Ray,

It is my understanding that the callbacks do not come from the kflop at all, but rather from the CoordMotion instance inside the GcodeInterpreter.dll

This means if you have a 10 second TP look-ahead, your display will be around 10 seconds as well.  It seems there is a fine line between a well synchronized tool path display and the dreaded buffer overflow.

If you look at the segment struct, it has place holders for line/sequence numbers and I once made a suggestion to Tom that a persistent variable could be updated as each segment was running inside the Kflop.

Oops…..

I meant to say the display will be behind 10 seconds and the  dreaded *underflow…

Brad,

Yes, of course. It will update basically as fast as I get status updates from the KFlop.

Ray L.

Brad,

Yes, the callbacks do come from the interpreter. For my purposes, even a 10 second delay is not a problem - I rarely actually use the display at all. And Mach3 is just as bad, if not worse.

Ray L.

Keep in mind this dialog is intended primarily for running G-code programs, no debugging, not so much setting up, etc. There will be additional dialogs for doing configuration, probing, fixture setup, debugging/monitoring, etc. There will be a separate toolpath window.

Wow, nice. Looks good so far. Only tested with the roadrunner file and all looks good. But the code is only G1s. Ill let you know how others work.

Hi Brad,

Yes that is correct correct.  The Interpreter and the plotted path are seconds ahead of the machine tool position.  I guess I don't see the value in trying to do the plotted path in closer real time with the machine tool given the complexity and extra usb bandwidth to send all the sequence numbers down to KFLOP and then have to constantly poll back the current one.   It won't always be in perfect sync anyways and by the time you look at the tool and look at the screen...  In KMotionCNC we use the current XYZ position from the MainStatus which is already uploaded and used for the DROs to plot a simulated tool.   So for me it is sort of a "feature" to be plotting the path incuding the lookahead and also show the point where the tool presently is.

And like I said before if you really want to limit the displayed path to the current machine tool position it is possible now.  You just need to poll the TimeExecuted from KFlop and scan the trajectory segment buffer in reverse to find that point in time.  It's more programming on the PC but avoids the extra USB traffic.

Is that justification enough for being lazy :}

Regards
TK

It currently runs on a KFlop simulator, so no hardware of KMotion software is required. Obviously, all the machine motion is completely dummied up, but gives you an idea what it will look like in action. At present, the menus do not work, so none of the other dialogs are implemented - just the main "Run" page. The editor is really rough (a VERY minimal implementation), and the fixture/pulley/tool/feedrate/spindle DROs are not connected to anything yet, but do otherwise work (i.e. - you can change values).

Are there any important functions missing? Keep in mind this dialog is intended primarily for running G-code programs, no debugging, not so much setting up, etc. There will be additional dialogs for doing configuration, probing, fixture setup, debugging/monitoring, etc. There will be a separate toolpath window.

Got one it stopped on. This is the line before the highlighted line.

Troy,

Yup! I'll add that. Now that I have a few minutes, I'll go through and try to add as many as I can.

Troy,

I've just put up a new version that I think will safely ignore all the codes that were previously missing. I also fixed single-step, which was broken in the last version.

Tomorrow, I start bringing it up on KFlop!

Ahh, I do now recall your resolution.  I will implement it ASAP!!

I would at least like to know the exact line of g-code being executed and not move from it until the next line is being processed.

I think I could just poll for the current Gcode line in my main 100ms update loop.  (maybe make current line a member in the Main_Status struct)

This way it would not tie up any additional USB bandwidth ;)

Is that justification enough for being lazy :}

Regards

TK

Brad,

Yes, of course. It will update basically as fast as I get status updates from the KFlop.
